QUADCOPTERS FOR BEGINNERS

Quadcopters !  Great for Beginners !

Difference between Quadcopter (Drone) and Helicopter

QUADCOPTER
A Quadcopter is a multicoptor that is propelled and lifted by four rotors. Quadrotors use symmetrically pitched blades. Control of UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)  motion is accomplished by altering the rotation rate and or pitch of  1 or more rotor discs, therefore changing its thrust and torque load lifting properties.
HELICOPTER
A Helicopter is a type of rotorcraft where thrust and lift are provided by  single engine -driven rotors, allowing them to take off and land vertically, hover,  fly forward and backwards. Helicopters use a single set of blades making them more agile than there counterparts, requiring a lot of skill and practice to maneuver effectively.

FLYING A QUADCOPTER
Quadcopters For Beginners
Quadcopter Flight Demonstration

Multi Rotor Quadcopters have become extremely popular in the RC arena in recent years. Stability is a key factor for beginners attempting to control the flight mechanics of any airborne RC vehicle, whether it is an RC Plane, Helicopter, or Quadcopter.  With  on-board technology integrated into A Stable (meaning -maintains balance) Quadcopter is not only easier for beginners to fly, but has become extremely relevant in the field of aerial imagery, delivering some stunning pictures if you mount an HD camera on one.  Skills involved in learning to fly any airborne RC vehicle can be enhanced if you practice properly on a good RC Flight Simulator, like the Realflight RF-X featured on our airarmorrc.com website.
Helicopter in Hover
FLYING A HELICOPTER

Regular Helicopters can be a challenge for beginners and even frustrating at times when learning to fly,  they tend to be more agile than Quadcopters making them more difficult to control.
There area number of basic RC Helicopter designs some of which are more maneuverable than others (especially those with collective pitch control). These designs are often harder to fly, but their aerobatic capabilities are beneficial for experienced flyers. Learning to fly RC helicopters takes time and practice, you cannot feel when things begin to drift off-balance, you have to watch for them and initiate the required corrections.

REGISTERING DRONES WITH THE FAA

What's required when Registering Drones with the FAA ( Federal Aviation Administration) ?

Do all Drones need to be Registered with the FAA ?

The answer is no !  But that is determined by the weight of the drone or Quadcopter. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) is now requiring that each drone purchased weighing over 0.55 lbs
be registered by the owner. This will include an identification number owners must apply to any Drone they own and fly exclusively for recreational purposes. If  you own a drone that weighs less than 0.55 lbs it is not required to be registered with the FAA. If you fail to register a drone you can be subject to legal ramifications outlined in the U.S. Government drone regulations. (Part 107 effective August 29th 2016).
Drone Manufacturers are aware of the FAA rules regarding Registering Drones with the FAA, in most cases the instructions for registration are included in your drone package. If you are in doubt you can go to the FAA Drone registering site online at federaldroneregistration.com and click on the tab in the middle of the home page titled REQUIRED DRONE LIST.  This known list of Drones on the market is updated daily, simply scroll down and find your model and see if it requires registration or not. If for some reason your model is not listed they can be contacted to update their list regarding your particular model. If you need to register your Drone you can do it conveniently right there on the FAA site.

Is there a Fee for Registering a Drone ?

Unfortunately Yes !  But the $5.00 cost is minimal compared to what you might pay for any recreational activity.  Another plus is the $5.00 cost is for each Drone operator regardless of how many Drones you own.

Do you have to be Certified to fly a Drone ?
Registering Drones With The FAA

Are you just planning to fly your Drone for leisure recreational purposes ?  Then the answer is No ! However, if you intend to use your drone for commercial purposes it will require the operator (pilot) to have a pilots license and a 333 exemption form from the FAA. If you are an RC hobbyist that flies and owns a drone right now there is no need to worry, no pilots license or certification is warranted.
Further Questions about UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) Registration ?
E-mail UAShelp@faa.gov or call 877-396-4636
from 10:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. Mon.- Fri.

Do you need permission from the FAA to fly your Drone for Fun or Recreation ?
FAA Drone Restricted Airspace

If you are flying for fun, leisure or recreational purposes, you don't need permission from the FAA, but you must operate your Drone safely at all times
SAFETY GUIDELINES
1. Fly at or below 400 feet
2. Keep your UAS (Unmanned Aircraft  System) within sight
3. Never fly near airports or near other aircraft
4. Never fly over crowds or groups of people
5. Never fly over sporting events or stadiums
6. Never fly over or near emergency response efforts (fires etc.)
7. Never fly under the influence of drugs or alcohol
8. Be aware of airspace requirements.

Airspace Requirements

Across the U.S. there are different types of airspace restrictions, a list of the most common restrictions that affect UAS flights are listed below

  Restricted Airspace
  Airports
  Temporary Flight Restrictions
  Stadiums and Sporting Events
  Wildfires
This is not a comprehensive list, you can always check the TFR website for restrictions in your area.

Drones can be fun and exciting but for the safety of the public certain restrictions have been implemented. There are a number of Drones and Quadcopters on the market today that can be flown in areas away from the public with very few restrictions. We offer a wide variety of drones and quadcopters loaded with amazing features on our Air Armor RC website airarmorrc.com check them out today !

R/C TRAINERS FOR BEGINNERS

WHAT CHARACTERISTICS MAKEUP  GOOD RC TRAINERS FOR BEGINNERS ?

A good RC trainer needs to be super stable,self-correcting, and capable of maintaining flight at slow speeds.
1. Stability
Stable meaning it needs to fly level and straight. Flat bottom airfoils are less aerobatic and therefore easier to fly. Airfoils that are semi-symmetrical tend to be more aerobatic and more challenging to fly. Wing position is critical on how the plane reacts in flight. Trainers typically have top mounted wings,(mounted over the top of the fuselage) there is a reason ! Here's why ! The total weight of the fuselage hangs below the wing enhancing stability. Wings mounted below the fuselage carry the entire weight of the fuselage on top of its wing, any slight imbalance tends to want to make the plane flip over.
2. Self Correcting
Good R/C Trainers for Beginners will correct themselves back to level and straight flight. Say a beginner panics in a turn or while banking the airplane and lets go of the controller sticks, the plane will correct itself. This is accomplished by a characteristic called dihedral. The dihedral in the wing angles upward from horizontal to maintain straight and level flight.
3. Maintaining Flight at Slow Speeds
The overall lift of the wing is affected by the type of airfoil. A good trainer should have plenty of lift, allowing the airplane to fly at slow speeds, while giving pilots the opportunity to learn the flight mechanics, and give them more time to react. Flat bottom wings are critical in accomplishing this. The minimum speed an airplane can fly without falling out of the sky is called stall speed.
Flat Bottom Airfoils
With a flat bottom wing, air passing over the wing travels farther than the air flowing under the wing, creating more lift than a symmetrical wing, allowing the airplane to fly at slower speeds, therefore giving the novice pilot ample time to react.
Semi Symmetrical Airfoils
Airplanes with semi-symmetrical airfoils will provide a much more aerobatic plane. Basically a step up from a standard trainer. Semi symmetrical airfoils provide less lift, and subsequently are not capable of maintaining slow speeds before stalling. Unless you have a club member or experienced pilot that can assist you, or you feel like you will can learn to fly quickly, then go ahead and choose an airplane with a semi-symmetrical airfoil. If you feel like you would rather play it safe and want a plane that is easy to learn on choose a model with a flat bottom airfoil.
Landing Gear
To keep the plane on the runway ground handling is extremely important especially during takeoff and landing. It can be a challenge for beginners, takes some time and practice to achieve. The steerable nose gear is less sensitive to control inputs to the rudder than tail draggers. For that reason the vast  majority of trainers are controlled by a tricycle landing gear allowing the steering to be controlled by the nose wheel.

2 of the Top 3 rated RC Trainers for Beginners

R/C Trainers For Beginners
Apprentice S 15e Trainer

Apprentice S 15e
The S 15e arrives with all the electronics pre-installed from the factory. There is approximately 1 hr of assembly time on tail and wing sections. The RTF model is equipped with SAFE Technology. (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope). If  this is your first attempt a flying it would be a good idea to try and find an instructor at a local club or flying site to assist you. This advanced technology adds some security, assists the pilot in handling windy conditions with its smooth flight characteristics due in large part to its 59" wingspan which is also easier to see at distance.  There are three levels of flight offered, beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
Several levels of flight protection can be added or removed as your skill level increases, but the panic button is always there to return the plane to level flight when warranted. As your skill level increases the model is capable of performing mild aerobatics such as rolls, loops and inverted flight.

Flight Simulators
Another option for beginners is a Real Flight Simulator which features a wide variety of the popular models on the market today that you can learn to fly.  I personally learned to fly several of the models I owned on a simulator. Extremely helpful especially when learning how to land. Great for seasoned pilots as well, numerous  helicopters, planes, jets, and large scale aircraft to choose from. The video below  gives a nice visual inside the Real Flight simulator which is also available for purchase on our website at .airarmorrc.com

Sport Cub S Trainer
Another popular model for beginners is the Sport Cub S. Designed to make flying simple and fun for novice pilots. Learn to fly at your own pace with this scaled down version of the full scale cub. Several levels of flight protection can be added as your skill level increases.  The Sport Cub S also features SAFE Technology. Learn the basics of flying, enhance your confidence and skills with 3 different flight modes, and return to neutral flight with a simple trigger in panic recovery mode. 4 channel control includes rudder, elevator, ailerons, and throttle, with an aileron steerable tail gear. To achieve the best performance from the Sport Cub S and its lightweight design mild winds are recommended. Beginner mode is recommended for take-off and landing, as your skill level increases you can advance to the next level.
